Paris

Mavreen had been excited to get to Paris, however she was nervously anticipating the drive into and throughout the city. Who could blame her with those daunting round-abouts and the crazy Parisians who race through them. Our GPS “Gert” did have a few moments of confusion which in tern caused a few moments of panic. In the end Mavreen impressively conquered driving in the city, despite the chaos.

We had a lovely hotel in a perfect area for us, and it even turned out to be just around the corner from Mavreen’s dad’s old high school. Given that we have both been to Paris individually, we didn’t feel the need to revisit all of the tourist attractions. We picked a few of our favourites to experience together. It was wonderful and relaxing to just wander the different districts.

Some highlights were several fantastic meals (a surprise, we know ;-) …authentic Moroccan and Thai as well as some beautiful traditional French cuisine…all accompanied by fantastic wine and/or champagne of course! Saturday morning in Monmartre stands out in particular. It was a perfectly sunny day and all the artisans were out in full force. If only we had the wall space for all the great pieces we saw. We were lucky enough to catch a Robert Doisneau photography exhibit at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation. We also met some really cool people in the LGBT district called Le Marais when we went out for drinks Saturday night to take in some Parisian DJ sounds.

Our last day in Paris was spent with Mavreen’s aunt and uncle Muriel and Phillippe. They were so sweet and generous to us. They not only drove into the city to meet us, but they treated us to a really nice lunch and played tour guides for the afternoon. We visited the neighbourhood around the Pantheon and Le Centre Pampidou and had a coffee above the city, taking in the panoramic views. It was a really special reunion for Mavreen – she spent a month living with them 14 years ago. She has always been fond of these relatives and had missed them dearly.

So here ends the honeymoon adventure of a lifetime. We had an amazing time seeing Europe together over the 5.5 weeks we were away, but we are very much looking forward to seeing our family and friends (and Tanner) whom we missed. We will never forget the memories we made. Thanks for following along with us.

See you all very soon…

Champagne

This region of France seriously rivaled Burgundy. Shauna’s instructor Vanessa was kind enough to arrange for a private tour and tasting at the Deutz Champagne House. Jean-Marc, the fourth generation owner, personally guided us through a jaw-dropping tour of his family’s estate and the wineries cellar. We both learned so much and have become diehard Deutz fans. After tasting 3 different bubblies, we were given a beautiful gift to take home with us. If you’re lucky, you’ll be around when that cork is popped ☺ We also visited Moet & Chandon, and Mercier… Neither compared to Deutz. We had an incredible meal at La Table Kobus restaurant in Epernay (thanks to Jean-Marc’s recommendation). The drive through the countryside was picturesque. We will definitely return some day!
