We pulled up to our hotel, just outside of Wiesbaden city center. Penta Hotel. The mattress was rock hard and they gave me food poisoning. Enough about them.
Day two was well worth the hassle though...
A private tour of our favourite winery, Balthasar Ress. Our guide, Clemens (Where's Waldo look-a-like) was a complete doll and took us through the entire property, the old winery and part of the vineyard. The wine maker, Thomas, poured us wines straight from the tank. The 2009 Riesling, which is yet to be bottled, is a true Star! We also toured the old winery where they run a bottle storage/wine bar concept which we think is BRILLIANT! Overall, we got a great sense of Ress as well as the Rheingau region. Clemens was super knowledgeable and shared so much of his time with us. Was fantastic!
Next was the Kloster Eberbach, a Cistercian monastery founded in the early 1100's. WOW!
The wines were very different to those of the Ress winery. Super grapefruity. Delicious!
We walked through the monastery in awe. It was gigantic and beautiful. Old wooden barrels, original wine presses and other wine making tools dating back hundreds of years. The pictures don't do it justice.
This was a great end to our time in Wiesbaden.
We decided to leave a day ahead of schedule and arrive in Strasbourg a day early. We filled the tank with hugely expensive petrol and away we went!
